Brief History
of the Trojan Dive Club
In the
summer of 1987, with a financial
assistance from the Amateur
Athletic Foundation (AAF) in Los
Angeles, Rick Earley, 1972
Olympian, the diving coach at the
University of Southern California
(USC), organized a learn to dive
lesson program. Many young kids
fell in love with the sport of
diving and stay with the program,
later called the Southern
California Dive Club.
Jeff Shaffer,
an outstanding diving coach,
replaced Rick Earley after
coach Earley left
USC in the summer of 1996. Soon
Coach Shaffer formed the
club team called the Trojan Dive
Club. Under coach Shaffer during
the years of 1996 to 1999, the
Trojan Dive Club produced National
Champions and outstanding age
group divers such as Troy Dumais,
Justin Dumais.
In the fall
of 1999, Hongping Li, two time
Chinese Olympian, named twice the
developmental diving coach of the
year and outstanding age group
diving coach in USA Diving,
returned to USC. Only this time is
not being a student athlete but
for the position of the head
diving coach.
Since 1999,
the Trojan Dive Club produced JO
National Champions and Western
National Champions such as
Ariel Rittenhouse, Jonathan Creasy, Dwight Dumais and
Leanne Dumais.
Besides the
growing age group program, the
Trojan Dive Club attracts many
elite senior divers to train
with the club. Rachelle Kunkel,
2004 Athens Olympic Games
finalist, American Cup Champion,
six time USA National Champions,
world championship team member.
Erin Borchard, NCAA Champion. Kevin McMahan, world synchronized
team champion, USA National
champion. Kim Berbari, USA

divers shared their invaluable
experience with the young and up
coming age groupers.
